The District Magistrate’s Court at James Town in Accra has sentenced Atsu Akakpo, an unemployed man, to three months’ imprisonment for stealing iron rods belonging to a businessman.
The convict was jailed an additional one month for assaulting a driver.
Additionally, the court, presided over by Mr Michael Johnson Abbey, has ordered the convict to compensate Mr James Amissah in the sum of GHҐ400 being the cost of the stolen iron rods.
Etse Akakpo, twin brother of the convict, who is an accomplice, is, however, on the run.
According to the prosecutor, Inspector T. J. Arthur, the first complainant, Mr Ammisah, is a businessman, while Moses Adzamli, the second complainant is a driver, who lives at Ofankor, where Akakpo and his brother also reside.
Inspector Arthur said Ammisah was putting up a new building near the residence of Adzamli and therefore asked Adzamli to be the caretaker of the building under construction.
The prosecutor said at about 10p.m. on October 29, 2009, Stephen Bovie, a witness in the case and a friend, who were lodging in the uncompleted building, heard some unusual noise on top of the building and therefore decided to move up to check what was happening.
According to the prosecutor, the two men went to the area where some iron rods had been arranged for some concrete works to be done on them the next day.
Inspector Arthur said while the two men were on their rounds they saw Atsu and Etse Akakpo busily dismantling the iron rods that had been arranged.
He said immediately the accused persons saw the two men they bolted. A report was made to the owner of the house, who asked the caretakers of the house to ensure that the intruders fixed the iron rods that they had dismantled.
According to Inspector Arthur, Adzamli, in the company of Phillip Kesse, another witness in the case, and one other person went to Atsu, who led them to the sleeping place of Etse.
The prosecutor said on reaching the compound of the accomplice, Atsu got angry and pushed Adzamli to the ground and he got injured in the process.
Not satisfied with what was going on, Etse, who heard the commotion on his compound, came out with a machete and started hacking Adzamli, but his efforts came to nought because of the alleged magical powers Adzamli possessed.
The prosecutor said Adzamli and his team overpowered Etse and seized the machete from him. He, however, managed to escape, but Atsu was arrested and sent to the police station.
