Six highwaymen allegedly shot and wounded four passengers and robbed a number of them of various sums of money and mobile phones between Mepom and Asikasu on the Asamankese-Nsawam Road at dawn yesterday.
The injured persons were made up of two men, and a boy and a girl, both aged 11. Their names were not immediately known.
A female conductor of a Metro Mass Transit bus, was allegedly stripped naked and her private parts searched for more money because the robbers were dissatisfied with the day’s sales she declared to them.
In a telephone interview with the Daily Graphic, the Asamankese District Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Yahaya Luchiraru, said around 3.30 a.m. yesterday he received a distress call that six armed robbers had blocked the road with 13 logs and were robbing passengers of their money and cell phones.
He said he despatched policce personnel to the place but before they reached the scene, the robbers, one of whom was wearing a military uniform and another a police uniform and wielding pump action guns, machetes, clubs and flashlights, had fled with their booty.
DSP Luchiraru said more than 100 passengers in about 16 vehicles from opposite directions of the road were robbed of their money and mobile phones after the robbers had ordered them to lie down on the road.
He said some of the passengers were brutally assaulted, compelling some of them to take refuge in the bush.
The district commander said some of the passengers claimed that they lost between GH¢600 and GH¢3,000 to the robbers.
He said no arrests had been made so far but the police had intensified their search for the robbers who were said to have gone to the operation without any vehicle but managed to escape through the bush after attacking the passengers.
DSP Luchiraru appealed to people in the area to inform the police about any suspicious characters they might come across for their arrest.
